Introduction
In 2012, we embarked on a transformative journey with Cal-Maine Foods, Inc. (Nasdaq: CALM), the world’s largest egg producer, developing a flock forecasting application that has evolved into a vital tool for the company. This ongoing project enables farm managers globally to customize program variables, providing accurate weekly egg production forecasts on a flock-by-flock and farm-by-farm basis. The application empowers regional and corporate managers to make informed business decisions and implement farm-program changes aligned with corporate goals.
Results
The legacy flock forecasting application, based on Lotus 1-2-3, was limited to a single Senior VP’s access. We initially redeveloped it into an Excel spreadsheet app before transitioning to the current web-based app. Leveraging technologies such as PHP, Laravel, JavaScript, jQuery, HTML5, CSS, and Microsoft SQL Server, the application is securely accessed via the company’s intranet. It operates on a dedicated server with its own standalone database, synchronized with the complex .NET based animal inventory management system and the user authentication system.
